Grid and cluster management solutions have caught on. From varied usages ranging from animating films to tsunami warning systems, High-Performance Computing (HPC) is finding its acceptance in the country. Industry estimates that the global market for HPC products and services is pegged at $400 million annually, and growing at a scorching pace, as each and every vendor is incorporating this functionality into their solutions.
It makes sense, as each and every CIO is charged with the mandate to optimize resources while delivering new functionality while keeping the budget in mind. Solutions which have incorporated this vary from SOA, to Web Applications and Portals, to Database Performance Acceleration. Tapping into this market is Pune-based Gemstone Systems, a provider of HPC solutions. Present in the country through its India Development Center, since 2005, the company has recently ramped up the headcount in its development center as well as has laid out plans to drive its business development activities. The headcount of its development center has been increased to 40 from an earlier 15, as this is its largest development center globally.
“We have been executing cutting edge development for our flagship product, GemFire at our development center in the country. With almost 90% of the product designed and developed here, we are now looking at tapping into the domestic HPC market by increasing our marketing activities. We operate in the extreme transaction processing space, with our major clients being in the banking and financial services. Now with the growth of this segment in the country, we have decided to increase our presence here. We will be looking at bringing on board more SIs who will drive our products domestically,” says Ajit Karunakaran, Business Development Director, SEA Region, Gemstone Systems.
To get it started the company has appointed Talentain Technologies, a solutions provider who will deliver high performance computing solutions in India, Middle East and South East Asia market regions. Talentain through its local support services, will deploy scalable solutions based on GemFire. The company has plans to appoint three such similar solution providers by June 2008.
Globally under the GemCache Data Grid, in partnership with IBM, the company offers a high-performance, distributed data management solution that includes its product bundled with the System X range of servers running the Quad Core Xeon 5300 processors from Intel. Vendors such as Cisco, Adobe, Intel, have all incorporated specific HPC solutions into their existing product range.
The company aims at replicating this with various domestic companies. Informs Karunakaran, “Similar to our global partnerships, we plan to have a strong India focus by signing on a few Indian hardware vendors. Hopefully we can see at least three deployments from these partnerships which will use GemFire as the enterprise data fabric to be made available by the end of 2008.”
