“Implementing quality processes was a challenge”

 Narendra Kumar Garg,
Chief Information & Security Officer (CISO),
 R Systems

Career Track:  Over 20 years in IT industry, including nine years at R Systems.  I have also worked as Scientist with India's premier R&D Organization – Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO) for over 10 years and gained extensive experience in the field of Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks.

Accomplishments: I led quality initiatives at R Systems from Oct '98 onwards. We started our quality journey with ISO 9001:94 in Nov '98. Subsequently, we achieved ISO 9001:2000 and CMM Level 4 in 2002; CMM Level 5 in 2003 and ISO 27001:2005 in 2006 for Information & Data Security. We also embarked on a Six Sigma initiative during 2004-2005. We have eight Black belts and 23 Green Belts certified by Indian Statistical Institute, New Delhi. These certifications and initiatives have helped us maintain long-term relationships, ranging from 2 – 9 years, with our customers.

IT deployment I am proud of: Our Noida centre is providing iPLM (Integrated Product Life Cycle Management Services) to Product based companies. The team at Noida centre has grown from 35 members in 1998 to 1200 members at present. Establishing this kind of specialized backend infrastructure with a specialized technical team has been a major achievement.

Biggest challenge faced: Implementation of quality processes within my organization. Initially I faced lots of resistance from the project teams; However, commitment and support from Senior Management, emphasis on training and my persistence helped overcome the initial hiccups. Our success is evident from the fact that we were able to sustain our quality drive and achieve higher level of process maturity year after year.

Latest Book:  I prefer spiritual/motivational books. I recently finished reading Punarnava – New again, a collection of short talks by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Spiritual Leader and founder of Art of Living. He inspires sustained individual commitment to joyful living, selfless services and self awareness though his eternal message of Peace, Love & Service.

Educational Qualification: BE (Computer Science & Technology), IIT –Roorkee and M. Tech. (Automation & Computer Vision), IIT – Kharagpur. I am also a certified Six Sigma Black Belt and Green Belt and also Certified Internal Quality Auditor and Certified Software Test Manager.
