HCL Infosystems bags large deal from BSNL

 NC News Network

HCL Infosystems recently announced that it has been selected to implement a  ‘System Integration Project’ for state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). The Rs 240 crore contract involves the implementation of over 60,000 ERP licenses, making it the largest rollout in terms of licenses issued for any single project in the country. The prime objective of the ERP system is to improve the information flow to facilitate better decision making, leading to improvements in the productivity, cycle time, financial performance and information transparency.
As a part of BSNL’s business transformation programme, HCL will migrate the telecom firm’s Finance, Commissioning and Operations functions onto a single ERP system. The project rollout includes setting up the main Data Centre at Hyderabad and the Disaster Recovery Data Centre at Kolkata. The installation and commissioning at these centers will streamline these business processes, providing a single view of the business, and aiding compliance of the storage, security, enterprise management and network management, access management systems with the existing data centers.
The project spans seven years including configuration, business process re-engineering, hardware, networking, operations and maintenance customization, training of BSNL employees and program management. In addition to replacing legacy systems, the BPR and ERP transformation program will yield better efficiencies for BSNL, due to the creation of standardized platforms and common infrastructure, along with a lower cost of integration and maintenance. BSNL has also selected HCL to provide ongoing support services for the project.

Windows 7, Azure and Surface Computing shine at Tech.Ed India ‘09

 By Brian Pereira

Tech.Ed is an event to showcase Microsoft’s solutions and products. Held between 13 – 15 May in Hyderabad, Tech.Ed-India 2009 brought product specialists, software architects, project managers, IT pros, decision-makers, technology influencers, media and analysts under one roof. They experienced unreleased products and discussed technology roadmaps. There were interesting discussions for business leaders and exciting product demos too.
Back in India after a gap of two years, the event opened with a keynote by Steve Ballmer, CEO, Microsoft. Ballmer highlighted how Microsoft technologies are enabling IT professionals and developers to help their organizations save money and improve efficiencies during difficult economic times.
“IT professionals and developers can play a critical role in today’s difficult economy. They are in a unique position to spot inefficiencies, maximize resources and help get the most out of organization’s IT investments,” said Ballmer. “Microsoft is committed to ensuring that IT professionals and developers continue to have the platform and technologies to drive maximum value and business results. The combined power of Windows platform will enhance their agility and help them respond to the ever changing business requirements,” he added.
In his keynote, Ballmer touched upon the salient features of Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, the Azure Services Platform, and Visual Studio Team System 2010.
At Tech.Ed-India 2009 there were 24 technical tracks and 112 breakout sections covering a diverse array of products and technologies. These were grouped under four main tracks: Developer, IT Pro, Architect, and Project Manager.  Each of these tracks had sub tracks. For instance, the Developer track had sub tracks such as Web Developer platform, Application Lifecycle Management, .Net and Virtualization. In addition, there were a series of business sessions for CXOs with session titles like ‘The CIOs journey to the board’. The CSO Forum Sessions had speakers from the banking industry and also from KPMG.
On the sidelines, the Certification Testing Center was offering free, on-the-spot certification to anyone who could demonstrate his/her skills on a Microsoft technology.  At the Technology Tents, participants could listen to specialists involved in product development.  The Hands-on Lab offered 24 instructor-led learning opportunities. At the Self-Paced Labs, one could experience a Microsoft product, while working at one’s own speed, with more than 200 learning opportunities available. Each lab focused on a specific task or feature of a Microsoft product or technology presented in a Breakout Session. Labs were available on more than 300 computer stations. At the Windows 7 Readiness Labs, participants got insights on Windows 7. They could also test their application for compatibility with Windows 7.
After this event some Microsoft evangelists shared their views with us. Manish Agarwal, Director Marketing-DPE, Microsoft India said, “We wanted to give the audience a complete 360 degree experience at Tech.Ed. This year we got an overwhelming response and positive feedback from both speakers and participants. For the first time we demonstrated surface computing to an Indian audience. We got a lot of customer enquiries for this product. There was a lot of excitement on Windows 7 and we had to double the capacity at the Windows 7 Readiness Labs.”
Moorthy Uppaluri, General Manager-DPE, Microsoft India said, “There were some awesome demos of Silverlight applications, surface computing, Azure and Dev 10 at Tech.Ed.”
