“Customers are not happy with proprietary technologies, as it makes it very challenging for them to add new functionalities”
With SMBs networking their operations and enterprises connecting a growing mobile workforce through wireless LANs, India is set to witness much action in the networking space. While Cisco and D-Link continue to be dominant players, ProCurve is catching up fast, aiming to ratchet up its rank from No. 4 to No. 3 by the end of this year. Shubhodeep Bhattacharya, Country Manager, India and South Asia, ProCurve, spoke to Sr. Associate Editor Sanjay Gupta on trends in the networking market.
Which segments of the networking market look exciting currently? We are seeing surprising growth in the managed switch market. Also, a lot of companies are now looking at the wireless LAN option along with traditional wired networks. Network security is another area we are receiving a lot of positive feedback from enterprises.
What makes ProCurve different from market leader Cisco? For one, customers are not happy with proprietary technologies, as it makes it very challenging for them to add new functionalities such as wireless access points or other quick-growth options. On the contrary, all our products comply with open standards. Another thing, which is a major reason why we are succeeding, is that IT managers and administrators really love the true lifetime warranty that we offer. Even though competitors are talking about it, they are not there yet.
Do you think wireless networks will leave wired ones behind?
There are pros and cons of both and we believe they will coexist for many years to come. However, going forward, the growth will be much faster in wireless, because of reasons of mobility and speed of deployment. Security will be a challenge, because it will be difficult for administrators to keep a track of who is accessing what data on which mobile devices.
