"Emphasis on Up-to-Date Technology and Big Compensation Packages Critical to Retain People"

Dhanalakshmi R.K.
Head - IS & Technology
Aditi Technologies

As head of Aditi’s IS & Technology division, I have found that the roles, responsibilities, and challenges have risen greatly with Information Technology (IT) becoming increasingly a critical part of the business.

People working for a company’s IT department have a vast array of tasks and issues they deal with in real time. Commitment, effective delegation, and participation are some of the key qualities required for such individuals. Increasingly, business acumen and strategic perspectives have also become part of the key requirements. To be a part of the strategic planning team, one needs to have a great insight into technology and its progress, and understand the requirements of both the management and clients.

I have found that by giving challenges which test management and skills-set is an effective way to identify and encourage potential leaders. Over the years of major technology deployments, the initial challenges have invariably been in-time implementations and tackling undocumented issues. However, with each periodical review and check-backs together with due diligence and commitment, we climb a few notches higher in successfully encountering those and other unexpected challenges. Providing on-going training helps to stay ahead of the new and changing technology landscape, and also ensures better network and software infra management. Through all this, the helpdesk management improves, which is an integral part of the IT department.

With increased emphasis on up-to-date technology knowledge and big compensation packages, it is critical to retain skilled people. This, we have found, is best tackled by ensuring that the roles and responsibilities help employees implement, improve, and enrich their skills-set. Besides offering professional and personal value-adds through their journey with us, awards and recognition programs further motivate and encourage employees. Effective mentoring is one management strategy that when percolated down the team, comes a long way in accomplishing business and career objectives.

The industry has evolved since the time it started. Positive changes include:

  • Better and stable technology
  • Industry working in tandem, in terms of standardization
  • More customer focused

Going further, the technology is being delivered to masses at a much lesser cost than when the IT revolution started!

Aditi’s IT department is geared to meet the above requirements with a detailed Technical Roadmap that is periodically reviewed. The same factors have also ensured the change in the perception of IT divisions across various organizations in India.

Top 5 management tips:

  1. High levels of commitment
  2. Sincerity
  3. Diligence
  4. Encourage willingness to learn, experiment, and pursuit of out-of-the-box ideas
  5. Effective communication
