Microsoft’s virtualization code
Data center managers who’ve been itching to get their hands on Microsoft’s virtualization software now have their chance. The company has released the first test version of Windows Server Virtualization, delivering it with what could be the last test version of Windows Server 2008. Windows Server Virtualization is a big departure from past incarnations of Microsoft virtualization technology, which required that Virtual Server 2005 run as a separate app on top of Windows Server and needed Internet Information Services (IIS) to manage Virtual Server 2005. Now Windows Server Virtualization will be a feature of Windows Server 2008, and a new management console eliminates the requirement for IIS. The main competition is VMware’s ESX hypervisor. VMware will still have the technical edge over Microsoft. For example, Microsoft’s software supports failover clusters—so virtual machines don’t go down when a server dies—but it can’t do hot migration for moving VMs to new hosts on the fly.
