New Notebooks Get Brain, Brawn and Beauty

new netbooksThe next generation of enterprise notebooks respond faster, work longer and smarter, and offer multiple levels of security. These notebooks also look svelte and have new features such as wireless charging and instant-on

 By Brian Pereira

There used to be a time when the laptop was a symbol of power and status. These days you see people using these devices everywhere—in airports, coffee shops, at press conferences—even on public transport. When buying a laptop, an information-empowered buyer asks questions about battery life, screen size, weight, connectivity and security features.

Further, new features such as instant-on, all-day battery life, seamless connectivity, multi-factor authentication and small form factor are fast becoming a standard on the mobility platform. Features seen in consumer notebooks, such as touch-sensitive controls and multi-media capabilities are now coming to professional notebooks. There is also a stronger focus on design and security aspects.

Vikram Mulye, Country Manager – Business Notebooks, Personal Systems Group, Hewlett Packard India- Sales, says, “There is more acceptability and adaptability for notebooks. Corporations that used desktops are now considering laptops (for refreshes) because the cost of ownership is decreasing; there are new features that improve productivity and manageability too. Notebooks are considered as productivity tools and we see notebook use proliferating in the enterprise.”

Says S Rajendran, CMO Acer India, “Advancements in hardware and software have made it possible to have smaller, lighter, more advanced notebooks. Additionally, as technologies become more prominent, prices seem to drop further. All of this is good for both manufacturers, who gain economies of scale, and for consumers, who can buy more for their money. The thin and light portables weigh less than 2 kg and have an extended battery life of up to eight hours. They achieve lightness by having external drives that can be connected via USB and smaller display and battery. Smaller businesses are following the trend among consumers, i.e. moving towards smaller lighter notebook PCs that offer extended back up time.”

Here are other significant trends that are driving the adoption of notebooks in the enterprise:
