“Unified Storage lets you drive a strategy around data and information management”
The tech world is moving towards unification and we see this in communications (UC) and security solutions (UTM). Unified Storage Management also offers a set of benefits. Simon Gregory – Business Development Director, CommVault, tells Brian Pereira why unified storage is better than using discrete products. Gregory also explains how the CommVault solution addresses key concerns about storage. We also cajoled him to reveal the secret behind the CommVault engine.
You have traveled extensively around the world. How do you compare the Indian storage market to those elsewhere? One of the things that I see here is that deduplication hasn’t really happened in India. There are pockets of it in certain areas. In markets like the US, businesses have moved from backing up to tape to disk backups, because they needed to service recoveries quickly. As a result, this has fuelled the market for deduplication.
In India, many companies are still backing up to tape, though some are backing up to disk. This opens up a whole market for us because we are the only vendor that can provide deduplication to tape. The other thing that I see in this market is that customers are very aggressive on pricing. The TCO is very critical for them.
Businesses here want to protect legacy investments. Does your solution address this key requirement? How? Customers already have a legacy backup solution; it’s potentially with tape. Well, we’re not asking you to replace all that legacy equipment. We’re going to consume that into the CommVault environment. In fact, we’re going to make more use of the existing infrastructure. We’re going to take those servers that they use for media management and use it for CommVault. So we make the (same) server function for backups and archives too. We’re not asking companies to replace their tapes with disks. In fact we’re asking them to preserve their tapes because in the long term it offers a much better cost of ownership. So actually, we’re promoting the retention of legacy stuff.
Why is a unified storage solution better than discrete products?
