D-Link Unveils Eco-friendly Switches
D-Link India has recently introduced new additions to its Gigabit Web Smart series of multiport network switches. Incorporating the company’s Green Ethernet technology, the switches are aimed at reducing power consumption and providing energy and cost savings without sacrificing operational performance or functionality.
The 16 port DGS-1216T, the 24-Port DGS-1224T and the 48-Port DGS-1248T network switches have a power saving feature that will automatically detect link & cable length and adjust power accordingly. While the operational performance of these switches remains unchanged, the DGS-1216T and DGS-1224T feature a fan-less design that provides a quieter environment and less heat dissipation.
The switches are designed for use by small and medium-sized businesses that require advanced features like Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs), Quality of Service (QoS), Link Aggregation (LAG), port trunking and secure authentication. It is also aimed at growing businesses looking at both power and cost savings.
The switches support port mirroring and supply basic port statistics to facilitate network administration and monitoring without complex programming or purchase of additional software. Their configuration is password protected and can be accessed remotely using a web-based interface. Another feature is the auto-discovery utility that automatically finds all the Web Smart switches in the network.
Software features include DSCP-based QoS, Asymmetrical VLANs that enable to send traffic to each other without requiring a Layer-3 switch or a router, Cable Diagnostics, and Trusted Host to help prevent security breaches. The updated firmware which includes all these features can be downloaded for the current hardware versions of DGS-1216T/24T, and will be shipped with the new power saving switches. The DGS-1200 switches comply with the RoHS and WEEE norms of manufacturing.
WD’s Caviar Black Series
Western Digital has recently introduced its new line of hard drives called the WD Caviar Black series. Available in capacities of 750 GB and 1 TB the hard drives are designed for use by high performance desktops, workstation and multi drive systems.
The 3.5 inch SATA drives operate at a speed of 7,200 RPM. The drives also feature a dual processor and 32 MB of cache memory. With a maximum transfer rate of 3 Gb/s they are designed for both high end OEM desktop systems and users who want to upgrade the performance and capacity of their systems.
Other technological features include the company’s StableTrac technology in which the motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations, and the NoTouch ramp load technology in which the recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit. The drives also employ the company’s Perpendicular Magnetic Technology to achieve greater area density.
The drives are covered by a 5 year limited warranty. The 750 GB drive (model: WD7501AALS) comes at a price of Rs 9,350 while the 1 TB variant (model: WD1001FALS) is priced at Rs 11,700.
RAD’s Ethernet-over PDH Solution Launched
RAD Data Communications has recently unveiled its new solution for maximizing Ethernet bandwidth over low-speed E1/T1 PDH lines. The Ethernet-over-PDH solution is a combination of the company’s Egate-100 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation gateway with its RICi-16 Network Termination Unit (NTU).
Combining the PDH ability to reach virtually anywhere and the E1/T1 circuit technology, the solution aims to provide a good Ethernet transport mechanism anywhere over the service path to both incumbents that wish to use the deployed infrastructure for new Ethernet services and alternative operators whose fiber networks are not extensive enough to reach all potential customers (off-net). It will also help backhauling WiMAX traffic and IP DSLAM extension.
Deployed at a carrier’s central office, the Egate-100 transports Ethernet over STM-1/OC-3 links to the point of presence (POP). From there, the Ethernet traffic is sent over E1/T1 lines directly to the customer premises, where a RICi-16 has been deployed to serve as an Ethernet access device and as a demarcation point between public and private networks.
The solution incorporates next generation PDH standards which include Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) allowing service providers to dynamically allocate bandwidth to customers by simply changing the number of E1 or T1 links bonded to the virtual group without having to replace the device or stop the service.
With its enhanced capabilities the solution promises to offer benefits which include scalable bandwidth provisioning, higher user throughput, better link utilization, minimal service disruptions and delays, and easy interoperability with third-party equipment thereby reducing capital and operating expenses.
The Egate-100 is MEF-9 EPL (Ethernet Private Line) certified, and the RICi-16 is MEF-9 and MEF-14 EPL and EVPL (Ethernet Virtual Private Line) certified.
Juniper Unveils New DPC Cards
Juniper has recently introduced three new interchangeable Dense Port Concentrator (DPC) families as additions to its existing line of interface cards. The MX240, MX480 and the MX960, which are a part of the MX Series range of ethernet service routers will enable users to optimize the deployment of carrier-class Ethernet networks and services while reducing costs.
The MX240 features new copper based Tri-rate (10/100/1000) Ethernet DPCs which will allow support for both low-speed and high-speed interface options. The MX480 with its 20 Gbps DPCs requires less power thereby being more cost and energy efficient than full 40 Gbps cards. The MX960 features multi-rate DPCs which will allow support for both Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces on a single line card.
The MX series uses the JUNOS software which provides advanced Ethernet Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) capabilities and other features that simplify the deployment and management of Ethernet services in large scale networks.
The cards can be deployed with existing interface cards thereby providing a combination of low speed and high speed interfaces to meet specific deployment requirements.
Trend Micro’s Worry Free Security Solution
Trend Micro has recently launched its Worry-Free Security Solution. Offered as a part of this solutions are the Worry-Free Business Security 5.0 range and Worry-Free SecureSite which are aimed at providing asset and information protection to small businesses and eCommerce site owners.
The Business Security 5.0 provides protection against identity theft, malicious website spam, and the risks associated with a mobile workforce by blocking web-based threats, malware and hackers. The package has two versions, Standard and Advanced, which differ in terms of the features they offer.
The Standard version is designed for businesses which have both Microsoft PCs and servers and require on-premise central management while the Advanced version which provides the same endpoint protection as the standard one, comes with additional message protection, designed for use in environments with PCs, servers, exchange mail servers, either stand alone or included with the Microsoft Small Business Server.
Features that are common to both versions include POP3 spam protection, virus and spyware protection, firewall, blocking infected websites and protection from rootkit and bots. Other features include Transaction Protector, Instant Messaging protection, Wi-Fi connection protection and lock down on select data files. The Advanced version includes additional features like protection against spam and phishing, content filtering and the InterScan Messaging Hosted Security.
The package also offers the location awareness feature that automatically changes security settings on laptops depending on whether the employees are inside the office or outside. It also provides multi layer spam protection by blocking spam in-the-cloud before it reaches corporate network. The SecureSite package is designed for e-commerce retailers and is a hosted service that protects online shoppers from hackers trying to exploit them by stealing credit card numbers, passwords and other important digital information. When vulnerabilities are found they can be averted by in-house IT or Trend Micro channel partners.
The solution provides protection at Web application, database, network, and operating system level against cross-site scripting, Web threats, SQL injection, hacker attacks, JavaScript malware, and phishing scams. The SecureSite package has a 24x7 technical support.
