The Big Storage Juggling Act

Data protection and backup

Besides coping with data growth, CIOs also have to deal with other storage challenges, some technological and some linked to costs. Take data protection and backup for instance. Enterprises increasingly recognize that data is a strategic asset that must be protected against a wide range of risks and threats, so data protection has become a high-priority objective for enterprises. IT managers and CIOs at these enterprises now face the challenge of identifying, deploying, and efficiently managing their data backup and recovery infrastructure.

Ashis Guha, Country Manager-India, Brocade, said, “One of their (CIOs) greatest challenges is justifying the costs associated with data protection solutions. This is because data protection is often viewed not as a revenue-generating function but rather a ‘necessary evil’—an overhead cost that most organizations would prefer to keep to a minimum. Thankfully, recent well-publicized events (natural and man-made disasters, lost backup tapes, and stolen corporate laptop computers), have increased the visibility and elevated the importance of data protection.”

Anand Naik, Director, Systems Engineering, Symantec India, believes data protection is emerging as one of the most critical aspects of the IT department today. “Businesses are struggling to manage as well as scale up their backup infrastructure. Year-over-year exponential data growth against a backdrop of increasing threats to the enterprise, along with recently imposed regulatory requirements for data retention and availability have fuelled this need. Indian enterprises are allocating over 30 percent of their IT budget to storage servers and storage technologies only.”
