`Visionary and Growth Oriented CEOs Help Change Perception of IT in an Organisation’

Anil Singh, CIO, N R Agarwal Goup of Industries

As a CIO, I look for qualities like initiative, ownership, positive attitude and problem solving techniques and approach in a person.

Understanding of business and use of technology for business benefit has to be known to CIO, in order to become a part of strategic planning team. It has to result in business benefits with knowledge of the same to top management.

I look for attitude and result oriented qualities of a person while identifying a potential leader. In a bid to encourage potential leaders, I recognize his/her contribution towards a project in public, pat back and share larger issues with the person.

All the same, in today’s fast changing environment, on-going training is very important. I personally give at least one hour a day to read articles/ manuals and browse through the Internet to learn new technology solutions and encourage my team also to do so. Regular participation in seminars, events and planned training sessions for the information systems department is also encouraged.

I encourage skilled people by giving them comfortable and at the same time a healthy challenging environment to work in. On a large scale, monetary benefits do not help in retaining trained people.

As a team, with implementation of MySAP ERP, we have added tremendous value to the organization. It has made the organization IT system driven, transparent, accountable, disciplined, automated & information oriented. We have gained many tangible and intangible benefits from the SAP Enterprise Solution.

Making the information system driven organization in areas of sales, planning, production, QC, distribution, finance and materials has proved to be excellent for the organization. We are now aware of each and every area of operation resulting in performance improvement and better customer service.
Change management, user training, data preparation and technology deployment in traditional organizations continue to remain major pain points during deployments.

Over the years, the industry has become more receptive to technology. People and management understand advantage of change and new technologies more than ever. Use of technology and systems is going to continue for productivity and decision making along with automation. Machine integration on shop floor will be more and more implemented.

To a large extent the perception of an IT department across organizations in India has changed. The change also depends on the CIO and what value IT has given to the organization. Visionary and growth oriented CEO’s of organizations have helped in changing the perception of IT department. But still it needs to be improved.

We have excellent qualified and technical skills. With so many technology options available, we are very well equipped to meet the demands.
