EMC and VMware: Building a Virtualized Infrastructure

Company: EMC
Published: February 2008

The server virtualization market is red hot, forcing companies to accelerate infrastructure design decisions. EMC and VMware have joined forces to help customers recognize the benefits of virtualization throughout the IT organization and are determined to continue to return time and money to the business. It's about time EMC started to leverage its portfolio with VMware.

The current adoption rate of server virtualization solutions is nothing short of phenomenal. Server virtualization technology use is on the rise among organizations of all sizes and in all industries around the world. ESG recently conducted a comprehensive survey of 706 global IT decision makers regarding current and planned server virtualization initiatives and discovered that 46% of current users consider themselves to be running mission critical applications in production and users expect that their total number of virtual machines will increase by an average of 150% over the next two years.

In the midst of transitioning the "physical world" to a "virtual world," new infrastructure design and purchasing decisions must consider the impact server virtualization will have beyond the physical server infrastructure. This includes impact to the rest of the infrastructure with all of its associated data protection, storage management and disaster recovery strategies and considerations as well as the overall impact to the application environment.
